The Northern Group was formed to provide services to spatial professionals living from Mackay north and west to the Northern Territory border. However spatial professionals from anywhere in the State are welcome to participate in Northern Group activities, including conferences, meetings, and other professional development events.
The Northern Group Conference is held annually in Townsville, Cairns or Mackay with seminars and workshops held in other towns through the region.
The SSSI Northern Group is recognised by the SSSI as a Queensland Region sub-group with representation on the Queensland Regional Committee (QRC).
Early Career Support Fund
The Northern Group is very proud to announce that in 2018 it will be offering its inauguaral round of annual bursaries to support students and recent graduates in the region.
Financial support will be available to attend SSSI events and/or university residential schools.

The Northern Group is very pleased to announce the winners of the 2018 program. All four deserving recipients receive $500 to assist with travel costs to attend their residential schools at university.
Vaughn is 28 and moved to Queensland in January 2017 and moved to Townsville this year. He previously lived in Adelaide and rural SA.
He is currently working as a Surveying Assistant with RPS Townsville and studying a BSPH (Cadastral) at USQ. Vaughn previously studied 3 subjects of a BSci (Spatial) at UniSA in 2016 and has previously completed a double B.Eng (Mining) (honours) & B.Sci (Geology, Geophysics and Applied Geology) at The University of Adelaide from 2009-2013.
Vaughn expects to become a Surveying Associate through SBQ upon completion of his 2nd year practicals in February 2019. He is really enjoying surveying and likes that he will get to work both outside and in the office.
Jake is a Surveyor at Rowlands Surveys in Townsville. He has been working for Rowlands Surveys for approximately 8.5 years now, after acquiring the job directly out of high school. Jake completed the Associate degree of Spatial Science 2 years ago and has recently re-enrolled into the Bachelor of Spatial Science (Honours) (Surveying).
Fletch started his career early 1994 as a GIS data entry officer, employed to input utlilities and planning instruments from paper based to digital record, also involved with building a very innaccurate and incomplete DCDB.
He started working with Registered Surveyor Robert Canty in early 1999 and been working in cadastral and engineering survey companies and agencies, since.
Bob really instilled in me a meticulous attitude and ethic to survey work, enjoy it, have a sense of humour and not to bite from the hand that feeds, well, in a literal sense.
He moved to Cairns at the height of the GFC, luckily there was still FIFO work around, which helped pay the bills with a new family coming on board. Since 2011 he has been with Cairns Regional Council, whereby Fletch already completed my Associate Degree and wishes to now to complete the Graduate program.
Mitch, 27 yrs old, was born and raised in in Ingham. He commenced a cadetship with Hinchinbrook Shire Council in 2009 and began an Associate Degree in Spatial Science in 2009 with University of Southern Queensland, which he completed in June 2013.
In 2015, Jake commenced a Bachelor in Spatial Science Technology with University of Southern Queensland, which he finished in 2016 and has now undertaking a Bachelor in Spatial Science (Honours) with USQ.
He is a Surveying Graduate with the Surveyors Board of Queensland and a member of the Young Professionals Committee of SSSI.
Mitchell is currently employed as the Engineering Surveyor with Hinchinbrook Shire Council.
